Course setting
Environmental problems are created at the interface between the
economic system and the natural systems which the economy
operates within. The course will focus on various aspects of this
group of issues. We will look at their causes -- i.e., the
relationship between the economic system and the environment. We
will further analyze different ways to reduce the problems -- i.e.,
different types of regulatory policies. The main emphasis will be on
how to correct externalities.
The course focuses on applying economics to improve human welfare
in conjunction with environmental issues. To do so, students will be
exposed to several economic approaches to environmental issues, both in
theory and through a set of case studies.
This course is an upper level MSc course for students with a BSc in economics
or previous exposure to economics. Students are assumed to take responsibility
for their own learning. That implies there is more to this course than the lectures. I will
focus on the following three aspects in particular:
- A set of case studies where students are to prepare and present an economic analysis of a given environmental issue
based on their reading of related literature. Case studies will be scheduled once the theory background for their
analysis have been covered in the lectures.
- Reading materials to support lecture topics or issues touching these.
- Work on exercises (no hand in, questions and answers found on exercises on these course web pages).
